Rue du Silence is a quiet back street just off the main road into the renown tapestry town of Aubusson, in central France. The houses have a gentle character there, and I love to walk through these cobblestone streets discovering the sense of history found in French everyday life.
This street is the beginning of a string of pedestrian pathways that climb high up the hill that overlooks - and is part of - the community.
A sense of quiet and peace is created by the taupe color field street at the bottom of this painting, leading the viewer's eye into the colorful collection of houses, ending with the deep blue sky at the top of the silk.
This fine art on silk painting is created with dyes for deep, vibrant colors and a resist that creates the lines that "draw" the scene. The museum quality twill silk has unfinished edges so that the quality of the material can be admired, and the fiber-reactive dyes are highly resistant to fading from light. The painting is hand-sewn to the archival mat and sits recessed behind high-quality museum glass. The art itself is 15" high x 10" wide, and the outer dimensions of the frame are 20" high x 15" wide, and is 1" deep.
