Jestrow's art quilts are rooted in the patterns drawn from traditions of American quilt-making, combined with contemporary materials and free-form constructions
MessageThe Americana Quilt Series is part of my ongoing exploration of stretching and challenging forms and structures of quilts, while considering the values that shaped quilt-making traditions.
Inspired by quilt piecework that was popularized by women of the Civil War era - I manipulate historical quilt patterns structures, creating movement with geometry. I push and pull angular configurations and sew them with edges exposed, accentuating flaws.
Some of these fabrics were dyed with the clusia leaves from around my house, tea from our honeymoon, and rust from bits from the family barn in Gainesville. Most of the solid fabrics were gifted / second-hand, or old pants from when brett was a grad student.
The colors started as varied flesh tones that represent the American population and our combined histories. Alongside the skin tones lie the colors and textures of the American landscape.
