What amazes me with this whole Half Moon Bay series, is that all of the reference photos these paintings were based on happened within a period of 5-10 minutes. Each piece is so distinctly its own moment, and this one is no exception. As the sun sets over the ocean, the sunlight will hit the water at a new angle, causing this lovely, sparkly transition to happen. It's such a magical moment in the sunset. For this painting, the challenge was trying to create that sense of "sparkle" without glittery paints. Using paler colors and building up to white seemed to be just what was needed.
