This project comes from a fascination in older forms of ads and entertainment, and how both mediums once intersected in a much more resonant form of reaching the public. I want to take the viewers back to a simpler time in which the colorful makeup was associated with something wholesome, but also played with the personal enjoyment of an individual who doesn’t get to be himself until he’s not working. Popular culture has unfortunately stolen the once friendly visage of circus workers for something that is more sinister, which in turn has blotted out the original reason America loved entertainment and spectacle. Fewer subjects allow for the maximum expressiveness and nuance like a clown allowed to show his real identity. Their faces are capable of a heightened range of feelings only seen in theater.
