This is one of the earliest views of the holy city of Makka drawn by Alain Manesson Mallet published in 1683 (1094 AH). Its significance lies in its faithful documentation of the layout of the city and its surroundings with all the main structures of the holy city identifiable. This panoramic view of the city captures the essence of the holy city and hence records its religious
and historical importance for the viewer to experience and appreciate even after centuries have passed.
Alain Manesson Mallet was a French cartographer and engineer. This view of Makka, is from one of his major publications titled Description de L'Univers printed in 1683 (1094 AH). Description de L'Universe contained a wide variety of information, including star maps, maps of the ancient and modern world, synopsis of the customs and religions, and portraits of rulers. This text was the largest and most comprehensive work of its kind published in this period.
