This road through autumn landscape takes place in the Adirondack Mountains, following the road up and around all the bends during an afternoon drive. Afternoon drives just to see the changing colors of the fall foliage is a favorite pasttime, and this journey started out no different. It was through these colorful roads lined with gorgeous reds, golds, oranges, and yellows and greens that I received life changing news once I made it to an area where we could take a phone call. The rain started out in this painting as a general lens of abstraction of paint materiality and gravity, but then took on a different metaphor akin to the unpredictable nature of rain that causes us to have to let go, despite the sadness or pain we might feel in the process. The rainy road ahead in this painting was the same physical road for the drive to our destination, but it was a different journey in our return, even though the concrete, gravel, turns and twists were all the same as before.
