Swellhead recalls reflections on ego and the inflation thereof, echoing the common expressions “big fish small pond” and “birds of a feather”. The neglected landscape offers little in resources to the squabbling sharks, a scenario sometimes reminiscent of workplace dynamics within fine art academia. Gossip ready lurkers observe the toxicity from the shadows. The scene is inspired by a contaminated methane flared stretch of I-55, NE of St. Louis, that is paralleled by stagnant pools surrounding the Milam landfill.
Swellhead was created from hand drawn transparencies utilizing oil based sharpie paint markers and clear dura-lar. The sky layer was cut and exposed from rubylith. The landscape was printed in a way similar to four color process in which transparent cyan, magenta, and yellow layers over lap to create the colors green, red, violet, and brown. Each individually hand printed layer included a “split fountain” or gradient of some kind.
