Squall is a tour de force, four-color woodcut, drawn, cut and printed by the artist and assistants on archival Japanese paper, using the American French Tool etching press. The artist experimented with numerous color possibilities by altering the printing sequence and concluded with two versions of Squall ( Squall and Squall II ), one for Pyramid, and one for the Barbara Kornblatt Gallery. An avid sailor, Clapsaddle and his artist wife, Virginia Daughtrey, would sail their boat in the Chesapeake Bay—often in extreme weather. Like Hokusai’s Great Wave image, there is so much movement and recording of light on the surface of water in this expansive, wide-formatted, and exquisite print.
