As a multidisciplinary artist with a deep interest in the use of portraiture as an examination of an individual and their context, I am exploring the possibilities that form offers, expanding ideas of identity and the relationship of materiality and scale.
This doodled self portrait is an act of resistance to the coded language of misogyny depicted in the pages of the book on which it is drawn. Widely disseminated and regarded within the conservative culture of the artist’s upbringing, the book sold over 800,000 copies, affecting individuals and the community at large. The overarching self portrait is the artist’s response, made up of smaller coded imagery, utilizing the language of doodling as a democratic form of expression; simultaneously unique to the individual, holding in tension notions of micro and macro perspectives and consciousness.
