When creating Skal, I was interested in creating a photographic representation made up of halftone dots that appeared as three-dimensional as possible. Instead of dividing a single photograph into its cyan, magenta, yellow and black layers, I photographed a skull four times, changing the direction of the light for each image. Each photograph was assigned a color (cyan, magenta, yellow, violet) and screen printed onto a wood panel. I wanted the background to be made up of flat areas of color to contrast the three-dimensional effect of the layered photographic image.
Beth Hansen is an alum of the Corcoran College of Art + Design and has been an artist in Washington, DC for almost 20 years. She specializes in non-linear screen printing, which focuses more on experimentation and manipulating the surface of the print to create varied editions, rather than executing a replicable design. Her work often focuses on nature and its oddities, as well as humanity’s interaction with it. In addition to creating her work, Beth collaborates with other artists to create limited edition unique prints.
