Lori Walsh-Van Wey is a northern Virginia-based photographer who works with vintage and plastic “toy” film cameras, as well as cyanotype and other “alt-process” photography media. She has a special interest in abandoned places, cemeteries, and darkly romantic subjects.
“Presidential” was photographed at a site in Williamsburg, Virginia that houses the remains of a local attraction known as “Presidents Park” that closed in 2010. The sculptures portray every president from Washington to George W. Bush and are around 18 feet high. They sit on private property in the middle of an industrial recycling facility, with public access restricted to occasional tours and workshops.
The camera used was a Lomography Mini Diana 35mm. It has a plastic lens, creating distortions and a soft focus, and produces a square photo to mimic the look of a medium-format film. The print was created in the artist’s home darkroom.
