Platt is a one-of-a-kind, mixed media self-portrait, combining pulp painting and collaged digital images of Platt’s mother and his own image. The piece was created as one of Platt’s earliest pulp paintings at Pyramid, along with images of his mother and father in other larger scaled pulp works.
For his exhibition at George Mason University in 2004, Professor Peggy Feerick commented: “The figure is his subject and his keen sense of observation, coupled with strong personal concerns, presents the viewer with images filled with pain and anger, with joy and hope, with redemption and concerns for changes to make. Platt’s work speaks of social and economic injustice, and of lessons to learn. He is a visual historian whose insights into the past, the present and the future leave us pondering the veracity of the past and the power to change the future.”
Michael Platt, a master, self-guided teacher, was awarded the Pyramid Atlantic Educator award for the Arts and Humanities month in 1994. His unforgettable presence, as recorded in this portrait, as well as his joy of life, remains resonant in our hearts always.
