Artist: Lauren Lay x
Lauren is a textile and mixed media artist and art educator. She is drawn to rich texture, color and pattern and achieves this through layering paint, beads and more onto fabric and/or paper. She is inspired by nature and story. Recurring motifs are sheep and mannequins. Someday she will combine the two.
Lauren’s love of working with needle and thread and reimagined materials started early on with the creation of accessories and furniture for her fashion dolls. Her love of learning and experimenting with possibilities carried her through many a side door of artistic development including a wide range of workshops and classes in person and online.
Her formal education includes a Doctor of Ministry in Arts and Theology from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. Part of her work included curating a show of art made by clergy women in the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church.
The piece selected for this show combines printmaking with embroidery. The gel plate print utilizes both a real feather and a paper mannequin cut-out. Traditional floss and simple stitches outline the figure and enhance the shape and structure of the feather.
