Artist Statement:
I am a planetary geologist who has spent many hours studying lunar dust and rocks in my day job. This passion for the wonders of the solar system has a tendency to bleed over into my artistic life.
I love the Moon. The rest of the solar system is great too, don’t get me wrong, Mars and Mercury and all the rest, but the Moon holds a special place. As it slowly reveals its mysteries to us through scientific discovery, I’ve gotten to know the Moon pretty well on an analytical level, but when I paint it, I feel connected to it in a deeper way. I can explore its surface with my paintbrush: the impact scars, some old, some still fresh and raw, the way lava once flowed into those craters and filled them up like lakes, the intensity of the sunlight and shadows on a world with no atmosphere. It is a place both alien and yet so familiar; we see its face every night.
