Story telling in stained glass, color and light, swirling into meaning.
Pittsburgh, Now and Then is a glass mosaic piece that was created by Daviea Serbin Davis. It is composed of two panels. The first parallel piece portrays a scene of Pittsburgh’s industrial history and the other depicts the contemporary city. The work depicts the iconic landscape of the region throughout time including notable Pittsburgh monuments. The artwork was a gift from the Pittsburgh Glass Center to commemorate the Year of Glass in 2007.
The first work, depicting the city of Pittsburgh today, has a color palette of blues, greens, and browns, with the striking yellow of Pittsburgh’s bridges highlighting the piece. The work centers around The Point and other various landmarks of the city, such as PNC Park, Acrisure Stadium, and the Cathedral of Learning. All are recognizable in this image.
The second piece shows Pittsburgh in the past. The color palette for this work is fiery and shows various industrial buildings in use with Pittsburgh neighborhoods in the back. The location shown here is not The Point, rather positioned around industry taking place on land, presumably by a riverbank.
