For me, freedom is both a theme in life and in painting. Freedom is not a level I can reach; it is an ongoing process. It sometimes begins with small, crazy things—ways of breaking free from the usual perspective, of taking a new position, of seeing new things. These small, crazy gestures help to catapult me out of everyday routine and make it possible to begin again.
In painting, too, it is a constant process of exploring new things and moving step by step further toward freedom. There are no shortcuts; these steps become possible only through personal experience. In painting as in life, it gives me joy when I can surprise myself, or when I allow myself to do something a little crazy.
