This view, looking north at the corner of Vancouverʼs Hastings St. up Abbott is based on
a photo taken by W.J. Moore on Oct. 22 1923. Miraculously, most buildings in this view
still stand - the facade of the 1906 Woodwards department store on the left, and the
Travellerʼs Hotel to the right - now known as the Metropole. The original Metropole was
across Abbott at the time but would be soon demolished to make way for the expansion
of Woodwards to Cordova St. at which point the hotel took over the Travellers and
remains there to this day.
Rather than the bustling activity in the 1923 photo, I chose to set the scene on a quiet
morning, probably a Sunday which at this time would have been extremely tranquil. Itʼs
just after a rain - the blue starting to peek through - a perfect Vancouver morning.
