The French graphic arts publisher Jean Lavigne asked Dali to create a series based on a theme of the artist’s choosing. Dali always had an interest in the concept of cosmic consciousness.
Cosmos I and II were originally conceived as a single portfolio of 12 prints but because it was thought to be difficult sell so many prints at once, only six prints were marketed in 1974 as Cosmos I and the other six were released in 1977 as Cosmos II.
Although known for his role in Surrealism, Dalí was also a seminal example of celebrity showmanship and the cult of personality, a phenomenon that dominates popular culture today.
