George Bee, Kwakwaka’wakw First Nation, was born in Haxwa’mis (Wakeman Sound) and is from Alert Bay, British Columbia.
Seal bowls, such as these, were traditionally used at a potlatch to serve important guests their food. The real seal was a coveted, rich food, and its fat was often rendered down into a condiment oil to accompany dried foods. So a seal bowl became a symbol of chiefly wealth.
