This view (based on an archival photo) looking south down Vancouver’s Granville Street from the end of the old swing
bridge, built in 1909 and replaced in 1954 with the current Granville Bridge. This older bridge was quite a bit lower than
the current bridge, causing traffic congestion whenever the swing span had to be opened for ships.
This 1909 bridge also carried streetcar tracks, which were never incorporated in the 1954 bridge as the transition to
electric trolley buses was underway at the time. The new bridge would be considerably higher than the old one, so every
building shown here had to be demolished to raise the grade.
A small portion of these original tracks, and a small part of the original Granville St. shown in this view are still visible
under the end of the current bridge just south of 4th Avenue!
