Saul Yuselew (d) fetishes have always been treasured by many. As so often is the case, the carving is reminiscent of the carver. Saul was a gentle soul who carved many bears with turned heads, some with eyes and later, with no eyes. Saul was a “presser” in Zuni, a healer with his hands. The gentleness and presence of this bear speak to who Saul was. Many people carry his bears in their cornmeal bags and his countenance in their hearts.
