Leonard (Old Man) Halate (d) was born in 1914. Very few Zunis were doing so when he started carving fetishes and selling them. His animals were eccentric.
Many are made of materials found in the Zuni Plateau, and Leonard had time to collect rocks as a sheepherder! His animals remained unique even as the number of carvers in Zuni expanded, and the work became more realistic and detailed. Leonard was steadfast in creating his visions of somewhat quirky, not necessarily traditional, creatures.
