I just love old things.
This original painting was inspired by a visit to Nooitgedacht farm in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape.
The old fuel bowser absolutely grabbed my attention almost the moment my 73-year-old eyes landed on it — a real blast from the past.
I had the pleasure of spending a day on the farm photographing reference material for a commissioned piece. There was so much to see — the grand wine estate homestead, row upon row of lush green vineyards, and of course the kind of old farm artefacts and infrastructure that I’m always drawn to.
But for me, it was this quiet, slightly hidden outbuilding, and the old bowser in front of it that really stood out.
This painting, "Marcel’s Outbuilding", is my interpretation of that moment — not just the scene itself, but the feeling of stumbling across something forgotten, tucked away, and full of character.
A piece that reflects my ongoing fascination with old, weathered structures and artefacts so typical of our rural South African landscape.
