Artist Statement
I have been painting for 48 years now. After three years, I was introduced to the technique of automatic painting which I have employed ever since. It is a spontaneous approach to painting without any preconceived ideas and a magic way of making conscious that which is hidden in the psyche. The paintings have led me on a journey down to some very dark places, culminating in a clinical depression in 1990. They then led me back up, initiating me into a very mystical understanding of the world. I hope viewers of the paintings are reminded of the mystery of their own lives.

Bio
After graduating with a degree in psychology from college, Mark Weiss chose to pursue a career as an artist, enrolling in The Art Students League of New York. For over 48 years he has been painting and exhibiting both nationally and internationally. He is the recipient of a Bogliasco Foundation Fellowship (1998) to paint in Italy, where he had a sold out show at Ca La Ghironda Museum in Bologna. In 2016, a film about his life and work called “The Invisible World” won best short documentary in the Berlin and Sedona film festivals.

For the past 30 years he has pursued another passion, Astrology. Initially coming to him during a clinical depression he has gone on to read thousands of charts. Both painting and astrology have complemented each other in his quest to understand the inner workings of the human psyche.
