Inspired by the Open Series of Robert Motherwell, this and other works in the Opening sequence take the form from the blocks or areas of separation that are evident in this series. The layers create separation both in and out of the work and back and forth across the surface. The black lines are gestural whereas the painted areas are more precise. It's this tension and combination that create a visual dynamic experience.
