In 2008, Bellamy was a passenger on the Breaksea Girl, a vessel for small-scale intrepid adventures into the most remote and inhospitable corners of Fiordland. During the 10 day expedition the ship visited numerous sites, significant not only for their natural beauty but their fascinating social histories. Breaksea Island, this painting’s namesake, is at the heart of it all in the center of Fiordland. Dominating the horizon as it juts out from the Tasman Sea, it is the first line of defense from the violence of the Southern Ocean. Bellamy has worked with broad confident brushstrokes to evoke the raw energy and excitement she felt on the Breaksea Girl.
