In the fall of 2000, lightning struck the tallest pine tree in the woods around our home in Angel Fire, the moisture in the tree got so hot it boiled and exploded the tree within seconds. When we got to the tree, the top half was gone, exploded into pieces hundreds of yards away, and what was left standing was twisted, mangled and ripped apart. I wanted to pay homage to this sentinel tree, which looked like it suffered a painful death, unlike the slow demise of most trees.
