Knitting the Noise is an ongoing project that involves creation of random patterns via a knitting machine and white and black yarns. The model of knitting machine I use, to create designs, use punched cards.
To create the card design I used equal numbers of white and black tiles, fishing them randomly from a container.
The black tiles correspond to the holes in the board. Holes in the board allow for the creation of colored dots
that form the design. By using two different colors, the pattern becomes visible as it appears on the card.
To add further randomness, I used two pairs of black and white yarns. One pair for the first color and one pair for the second. In this case the drawing remains visible only partially, based on the twist that the yarn takes during processing, which will therefore show a tendency towards black or white.
