Biography

Madaline Elliot Buchanan was born in 1908 and later attended Meredith College. After graduating in 1929, she worked at Meredith as Director of Religious Activities. In 1931, she married Edgar W. Buchanan and the couple moved to Delaware.

Buchanan was very invested in the church. She worked with the ecumenical movement within the Dover Council of Church Women United, the State Council of Churches, and other interdenominational groups. She was the first woman to serve on the Delaware State Board of Education and oversaw the board during the desegregation of public schools.

She was recognized for “outstanding service to the community” in 1984, receiving the Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce’s E.W “Buck” Buchanan Award, named in honor of her husband. She was also awarded the Distinguished Alumna Award from Meredith College Alumnae Association in 1983. Buchanan served on the board of trustees of Delaware State College and Wesley College, and on the Advisory Board of the People’s Bank in Dover.
