Artist: Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008)
By 1960, Robert Rauschenberg (born 1925 in Port Arthur, Texas), was an established artist, well known for paintings and for his innovative “Combines” (works that integrate painting and sculpture). Always concerned with expanding the collaborative and participatory aspects of his work, he turned his focus to printmaking in the early ‘60s.
From this time on, Rauschenberg experimented with new f ine art printing techniques, including solvent transfer, commercial lithography, transparencies, and overlay. He persistently blurred the distinctions among painting, photography, sculpture, performance, and other mediums. He even transformed his Combines to be produced in multiple editions, just like fine art prints.
Ref lections and Ruminations became primary themes of Rauschenberg’s art as he incorporated recycled materials, images, and personal memories into his work. Ultimately, his imagery fused the personal and the popular, mixing familiar images from pop culture with the intimate episodes of his own life experience. This exhibition explores these interrelated themes in the work of a profoundly inf luential American artist.
