Artist: Gene Montez Flores (b. 1935)
Originally from California, Flores lived and worked in New York City for a number of years before moving eight years ago to Plainfield, Massachusetts where he currently maintains his studio. His sculptures, some of which--like this exhibit--seem to echo the ruddy, eroded vistas of western landscapes, have been widely exhibited throughout the United States as well as in Sweden, Germany and Poland. Most recently he has been working on an installation--"Love's Seat Project"--for Battery Park in New York City and has been chosen for two public art projects in satin-finished stainless steel for the new plaza area being created on Main Street in the city of Northampton, Massachusetts by the Northampton Arts Council. His work "Paviilon Papillon" (Butterfly Pavillion) was chosen for inclusion in the Socrates Sculpture Park Tenth Anniversary Exhibition in Queens, New York in 2001.
