Surfgrass (Phyllospadix spp) is a type of marine flowering plant, not an algae. It grows in the in turbulent waters at or below the low tide line. Surfgrass plants require a rocky substrate to anchor onto, and can pollinate both at the surface of the ocean, or while completely submerged. Beds of surfgrass support many species of invertebrates, juvenile fish, and algae. During low tides, they are often exposed to the air, and occasionally serve as bedding for resting harbor seals or sea lions.
