For those who have known me for a long time, it's no secret that my first ever pet was my Dwarf Rabbit, Oreo. He came into my life when I was in high school and remained by my side ever since. Despite his small size, the bond we shared was unbreakable, even when I developed allergies to him in the last year of his life.
Oreo had an unforgettable personality and never failed to make me laugh. He and my Golden Retriever, Bryn, shared a special relationship; Bryn adored him, and the feeling was mutual. Oreo never seemed afraid of her, often jumping on her back while she lay by his cage.
I created this piece as a memorial for Oreo, capturing a scene from a dream I once had where we had a conversation high up in a huge tree, overlooking the Universe from one of its branches. In the dream, he appeared to me as a Jackalope, a mythical creature from North American folklore. The memory of this dream and the conversation we shared stayed with me, inspiring me to bring it to life through art.
Using watercolors, I aimed to convey the surreal and ever-changing nature of dreams, giving the painting a lucid quality. The scene represents the deep connection I shared with Oreo and the lasting impact he had on my life, even after he was gone.
