This piece is part of an early stencil series inspired by the anime Afro Samurai. Using repeated stencil work, I rendered Afro and Kuma in black and white, allowing the figures to remain bold and graphic while shifting the background colour from piece to piece. The last piece of the series was done in 2019 with acrylic paint with mica gold flakes on the sun to add subtle texture and contrast against the flat imagery.
The work is composed of four separate canvases, two larger and two smaller, arranged together as a single installation. While the imagery is restrained, the scale gives the piece a strong physical presence and reads more as an environment than a single image.
Created between 2015 and 2019, this series marked an important stage in my practice where I was heavily influenced by anime, graphic imagery and repetition. The first three works from the series have since sold; this is the final remaining piece from that body of work.
