  • Artist: Jerome Meadows (American, b. 1951)

Jerome B. Meadows is an American sculptor, public artist, and designer whose work explores the intersection of history, memory, culture, and the built environment. Born in the Bronx, New York, Meadows earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1973 and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Maryland in 1981.

Based in Savannah, Georgia, since 1997, Meadows has worked as a full-time studio artist and public space designer, creating large-scale public art installations throughout the United States. His practice integrates sculpture, site design, landscape considerations, and architectural elements into cohesive environments that engage communities and celebrate place. His artworks can be found in public and private collections nationwide, including those of the cities of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Alexandria, Virginia; and Anchorage, Alaska.

Among his notable achievements is the sculptural commission for the African Burying Ground Memorial in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a project that received a 2013 National Endowment for the Arts Art Works Grant recognizing “the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence.” In 2010, Meadows was awarded a Brown Foundation Residency Fellowship at the Dora Maar House in Ménerbes, France, through the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

In addition to his studio practice, Meadows has contributed extensively to arts education. He has held teaching positions and residencies at institutions including the University of Maryland, Howard University, the College of Charleston, the Maryland Institute College of Art, the Baltimore School for the Arts, North Adams State College, and the DC College of Fine Arts. He also served as a Fulbright Lecturer at the National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan, and participated in a Fulbright-Hays study tour examining traditional crafts and artistic practices throughout the country.

Meadows has also curated innovative museum exhibitions, including Reframing A Perceptual Paradigm (RAPP) at the Telfair Museums in Savannah, Georgia, where he combined selections from the museum’s permanent collection with his own work to challenge conventional approaches to viewing art and experiencing museums.

Central to Meadows’ artistic philosophy is the belief that art serves as a bridge between the objective and the subjective, linking factual understanding with imagination, and connecting daily life with the enduring power of ritual and myth. Through sculpture, public art, and design, he seeks to create works that inform, inspire, and elevate the human experience.
