Composite Lens challenges tunnel vision’s narrow perspective by positioning it as part of complex of overlapping views. To encounter this installation is to be reminded that truth must be found by looking at facts from a variety of different vantage points.
Composite Lens is an art installation but also a kind of optical device that responds to the architecture of the atrium at the University of Cincinnati Law Building. The act of looking through the Atrium (and through the artwork itself) is inherent to the experience of this project. Delicate chains hanging in “catenary” curves that march along the ceiling comprise this artwork. Its magic comes from tubes or “tunnels” made by the chains. From the collaboration pods on the east side of the atrium and the catwalk on the west, viewers see directly along the axis these tubes, as if looking down a tunnel.
However, rather than present a single perspective - the artwork presents several overlapping perspectives. Multiple tunnels, in a spectrum of color, interlace to create a composite lens for seeing the truth.
