STATEMENT:
After spending time in “Holding Spaces,” a recent exhibition of enameled vessels at Springfield Art Museum, I was inspired to dip back into raising vessels. Beginning with a flat sheet of copper or silver (or other metal) and repeating a sequence of annealing and centrifugal hammering over stakes, raising is a metalsmithing process I learned from a true master, Sarah Perkins. In making these vessels, I celebrate the time I spent in her tutelage and quietly rejoice in the meditative repetition of forming an object with volume from something flat and lifeless.
