STATEMENT: Both of these works share a palette inspired by the creek that flows through my childhood home. My parents live on Pearson Creek in the Ozark hills of southwestern Missouri. They have preserved the natural beauty of the environment by forgoing lawn chemicals that homogenize the vibrant native flora into the golf-course-esque wastelands of their neighbors’ yards. In the spring, my parents’ hillside is illuminated by thousands of delicate wildflowers while the creek takes on the unnatural shimmer of herbicide runoff from the neighborhood’s banal toxicity. Home is an oasis of natural beauty in an increasingly plasticized valley in the Ozarks. Coming home means taking measures to make sure these delicate ecosystems still exist for future generations of all creatures from crayfish to calcified golf enthusiasts.
