his piece explores the relationship between human awareness and the natural world through the presence of a crow: an animal often associated with intelligence, observation, and intuition. Positioned close to the figure’s head, the crow appears to exist at the threshold between thought and instinct, suggesting a connection between the internal and external worlds. Crows are highly adaptable creatures, able to survive across a wide range of environments by observing, learning, and responding to their surroundings. In this work, the crow becomes a symbol of awareness shaped by environment, reflecting the way both humans and animals adjust to the spaces they inhabit. The composition suggests a more internal form of habitat: one shaped by perception, memory, and experience. The relationship between the figure and the crow implies that the environments we occupy do not only surround us, but live within us. Habitat is often understood as a physical place, a nest, a shelter, a home, but it is also something more personal. It is where we feel protected, understood, and able to exist as our full selves. In this work, I explore the idea that humans, like animals, carry an instinctive search for belonging and safety. My work often blends human and animal imagery to reflect this shared connection. The transformation between forms suggests that our environments shape who we become, while also reminding us that we remain part of a broader ecosystem of living things. In the context of this exhibition, habitat becomes both literal and symbolic. It is the structures we build, the communities we nurture, and the spaces (natural or human-made) that allow life to thrive. Just as birds build nests and animals establish territory, people seek places where they can grow roots, build relationships, and create stability. This work reflects the belief that habitat is not only about shelter, but about belonging. It also speaks to the human responsibility to help create environments where others can thrive, echoing Habitat for Humanity’s mission to bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope.
