ARTIST STATEMENT
My education, creative passion, and early career were in the field of interior design. As a young designer, I was very fortunate to have as a mentor a woman who saw the importance of placing original art in her client's homes. This exposed me to combing galleries for the perfect piece and the transformation these pieces could make in a space. My personal design aesthetic continues to be art-based and has kept me art curious.
Like many women, my life has taken unexpected turns. I left my professional circle to relocate thousands of miles away for love and marriage. I stayed home with my three children when they were young. As my children grew older, I chose for myself work positions that allowed for lifestyle convenience but did not engage my creative mind. Along the way, the path I had imagined for myself creatively and professionally seemed to disappear while I wasn’t looking.
A few years ago I knew I needed something to feed my need to create, still the restlessness inside of myself, and bring a meditative peace to my life. This is when I began an art practice for myself that slowly grew into the courage to show my work.
I have developed into a painter and fiber artist. I am influenced by the Art Deco, Bauhaus, and Brutalist movements. My paintings, fiber pieces, and work in eggshell inlay explore similar forms and compositions. These compositions are mostly abstract, geometric, and linear forms. I find the balance between positive and negative space to be a compelling place to explore. A common theme in my work is the breaking apart and reassembling of pieces to create something new, much like life and womanhood.
