I was living in in Southern California during the time of the riots that followed Rodney King's beating. In the aftermath of the destruction in South Central LA, I found myself thinking about the idea of black and white in art. The relative scale of white to black in art is referred to as a value scale. From that seed, I found myself thinking of images in black and white being an opportunity to discuss "value". From that, I produced a short series of large black/white paintings on industrial brown paper called, the "Value" Series.
