The Sligo Wave provides an opportunity for audiences to explore Sligo’s place in the development of the painting in Ireland. For over a hundred years, Sligo has attracted many different generations of painters to find inspiration in the ever-changing light along its rugged Atlantic coastline. Many artists were born in the region, but others relocated there, drawn by the dramatic landscape and pace of life, creating a rich artistic community in the county.
This show features work by Sligo natives Jack Butler Yeats, Constance Markievicz, and Patrick Collins; alongside painters of successive generations who moved to Sligo from the 1970s including Sean McSweeney and Patrick Hall. The exhibition is brought up to the current day with works by several contemporary painters including Daniel Chester and Emma Stroude.
Available works on show by Nick Miller include a historic 2006 large-scale TRUCKSCAPE, a Studio view from his YARD series in 2013, and three new SEA paintings from 2023– which can be viewed in a VIEWING ROOM
