Nicholas has always been keenly aware of climate change and the dire effect of global warming on our planet. As glaciers continue to melt at unprecedented levels, the seas rise, ocean currents are altered, weather patterns change and there is an ongoing catastrophic effect on our world.
In this painting, he again uses cyan blue throughout, almost as an underpainting. During our trip to Alaska, we had the privilege of seeing a number of glaciers calving, breaking away, from larger masses of ice. I will never forget the sound, the Native Americans called it “white thunder”, and it still echoes in my heart. As they broke away, they often inverted, revealing extraordinary shades of blue. We learned that this ice was the most ancient.
For me, this work is filled with movement and passion. It calls me to open my eyes and my heart. It invites me to see past my own limited vision.
