Sunlight on ice is powerful. The first rays, pink and brilliant, demand attention and remind us that to be awake is to see anew. This painting explores that moment. The dawn sky, variegated shades of blue, what might be snow-capped mountains, the brilliance of early light saturating the earth with a deep rose. In the foreground, past the darkest blues, there is a diffusion of pigment and form.
The juxtaposition of the darkness and the light, as well as the solidity giving way to movement in this work, encourages me to allow change within myself. When human beings get incredibly frightened, we have three main responses: fight, flight or freeze. I think I have experienced all three this year. When I study the quietude of this work, it gives me hope. The constant reality, for every human being, is change. And after this year, everything will have changed.
Will I allow what may have frozen in me to be touched by warmth of dawn? Will I let go of what no longer serves me? Will I open to the possibility that transformation and healing is ongoing?
