Tenshi (Japanese for Angel) is garbed in a traditional child’s kimono, obi and geta, created to exacting standards with the kind advice and counseling of a Japanese friend. She stands 10 ½” tall, with a jointed porcelain body, hand painted eyes and a handmade mohair wig. She holds a string of paper cranes, an homage to Sadako Sasaki, the child of the Hiroshima bombing who believed that if she could fold 1,000 cranes, she would survive her injuries. Sadako died from Leukemia when she was just 12 years old, but she has never been forgotten. There is a statue of Sadako holding a golden crane in the Hiroshima Peace Park, and each year, people create 1,000s of cranes and festoon the park with garlands of them in her memory.
