Eddie Dominguez (1957- )

“It is rare that I make objects such as single plates or cups that can stand on their own. It’s just not a focus. I think of my work as all part of the same substance. It is like confetti. There may be different sizes and colors, but it is all torn paper.” Eddie Dominguez, born in 1957 in Tucumcari, New Mexico, is one of the leaders in contemporary ceramic and multimedia art in the country today. After receiving his bachelor of fine arts degree from Cleveland Art Institute in 1981, Dominguez continued his education at New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in New York, completing his master’s degree in fine arts in 1983. Dominguez was the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts grants; several artists-in-residencies, including the University of Montana in Missoula and the Cleveland Institute of Art; and numerous scholarships. He is currently an assistant professor of ceramics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Besides teaching at UNL, he continues his studio work and is raising his son, Anton, with his wife, artist Diane Marsh. Dominguez also has lectured and conducted workshops at leading institutions such as Anderson Ranch, Colorado; Tamarind Institute, New Mexico; Haystack Mountain School, Maine; Greenwich House Pottery, New York; Rhode Island School of Design; Bennington College, Vermont; and Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan.

His work is shown in public collections, including the ceramic tile murals at Massachusetts General Hospital, the Martin Luther King Building in Tucson, Arizona, and the Phoenix International Airport. Museum exhibitions include Louisiana State University; Bellevue Museum of Art in Washington; Massachusetts College of Art; Depauw University in Indiana; Contemporary Craft Center in Oregon; Lannan Museum in Florida; Cedar Rapids Museum of Art; Santa Fe Community College; the New Mexico Museum of Fine Arts; and the New Orleans Museum of Art.
