The landscape in Northwestern Nebraska is rich in natural history ––biologically, hydrologically,
geologically, and for its signifcant fossil record. CSC's Math Science Center refects this
abundance.
This Artwork engages with the site's dramatic topography and 20' foot grade change (from the top
of the hill to bottom) to daylight 3 of the important stratigraphic layers. Three steel sculptures
emerge out of the hillside to evoke 3 layers of Nebraska's natural history. On each sculpture laser
cut graphics create designs that connect to that specifc layer.
Plains Grasslands /Botanical Layer: This sculpture has laser cut outs silhouettes of various high
plains native plants that are found in the Center's Herbarium.
Ogallala Aquifer/Geologic Layer: An expanded geologic cross section of the lower Platter River
Showing Hudson Meng and Agate Fossil Layers: These laser cutouts evokes a layer of bones one might fnd
in the geologic strata on a paleontology dig site. Two strata of bone silhouettes are shown here––
bones from the Hudson Meng Boneyard from the Holocene epoch and bones from the Agate fossil
beds from the Miocene epoch where many of Nebraska's dinosaur bones date back to.
In addition the top profle of each sculpture evokes the soft mesa-like landforms of the region's
most unique spots such as Toadstool Park, Agate Fossil Beds, and even the gentle hills near the
college.
