A skull often represents death or something scary to be avoided. This piece is meant to capture the relief and joy felt when a fear is overcome. It is meant to be over the top with exuberance. The skull becomes a catalyst for growth. The rainbow rays show how a shift in mindset lead to seeing everything in a different light. The intentionally amorphous shapes could be a bountiful landscape, the sea, or clouds.
This artwork features a found deer skull that I cleaned and sealed prior to painting. My respect for the animal deepened during hours of handling. The textured layers are acrylic skins. Remnants of color mixed for paintings over the past two years were saved, with this series in mind. The materials support my intention to show and celebrate that, although matter changes form, life continues. The skull and acrylic skins served their original purpose. Here they are given a new life.
