Lindsey and I met when she invited me to exhibit at a group show at Bethel Woods. I asked her if she would pose for me in the nude. She didn’t hesitate to say yes.
The first photoshoot of Lindsey didn’t go well. We were both nervous about shooting her naked. We had only met ten years prior for a few minutes. After a few tries and grabbing some props, an old jean jacket in this case, I finally got the photo I wanted. It wasn’t what I intended. It was better. Not only was it natural and not a posed photo, but I also loved that it was open to interpretation. The image was so bold and perfectly represented my conceptual direction that I thought it should be big.
Some have said it’s aggressive and funny. Others find it provocative. However, the best interpretation so far was by a collector who said it makes me feel like it’s saying, “I want to take back the flag.” In other words, the American flag is currently being politically misused.
