Strating from 1621, Swiss editor and engraver Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593-1650) published a broad work comprising 21 volumes, "Topographia", divided according to the European regions. After his death, his work was continued by his son. Engraving on copper, manually coloured after imprinting. The author is also famous for the illustrations which accompany alchemy or natural history works.
